And while the city adores the Tigers, Lions and Pistons, you might argue that the greatest team in the city is definitely the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. Although it might appear ludicrous that a hockey team is the most beloved sports team in town, they just don't call Detroit "Hockey Town" for nothing.
While you walk throughout the city, you notice that you are bound to find a Detroit Red Wings t-shirts in every shop, restaurant and city bus. Throughout the last 20 years or so the Red Wings happen to be among the league’s most successful teams. But before you think that these are all fair-weather fans, these fans were just as intense as during their decades-long Championship drought also.
Why is it that the Detroit Red Wings rule Detroit? When it comes down to it, it's a combination of the cities lust for hockey, and also the Red Wings happen to be one of the more reliable teams the city has had. Since 1996 the Red Wings have won four Stanley Cups making it to the finals another 2 times. The rest of the city's three major sports teams? Just one title in that time (the 2004 Pistons), and one other visit to the finals (2006 Tigers).
But the fascination with the Detroit Red Wings is all about more than numbers, it's about longevity. The team has been around for more than 85 years, meaning generations have passed on the passion for the Wings and a Detroit Red Wings jerseys to their children.
Ironically, the Red Wings play their home games in the Joe Louis Arena, which is arguably one of the worst venues in all of sports (i.e. the oldest and most outdated). With that said, there's a charm to the arena along with a feeling of "classic hockey" that you simply do not get form many of the new "mega" arenas.
Whether you wear a Detroit Red Wings jersey, and bring an octopus, to the hockey game, you may expect a great experience with several of hockey's most intense, intelligent fans. While it may not have the glitz and the services of other arenas in town, it's arguably on the list of the city’s best sports landmarks, similar to Madison Square Garden in New York, or Soldier Field in Chicago.
